Two People, One New Name.

For Love & a Better Last Name.
I love the idea of taking your partner’s last name, it’s timeless, romantic, and meaningful. But I also think it’s okay to admit that sometimes, tradition doesn’t always fit the life you’re actually living.
For us, it wasn’t about rejecting because it is traditon, It was just about being honest; not every family name feels like home, and you shouldn’t have to carry one that doesn’t reflect who you are or what you value. A last name shouldn’t come with emotional baggage or side-eye energy from people who happen to share it...
SOo, we decided to pick our own. No drama. No deep statement. Just two people wanting something that felt more us, and that honestly sounded good with our names, frankly.
The process has honestly been charming, and very enjoyable, less “heritage and history” and more “what sounds good with our first names?” It’s giving practical, maybe a little superficial? but also really intentional. We said names out loud like we were doing a brand consult: would it look clean on an envelope, sound good on a email, and not make our kids roll their eyes someday?
People might take this as, it’s such a serious decision, but we’ve been having fun with it! We want a name that represents our love and autonomy, something that isn’t tied to anyone else’s behavior, family politics, or outdated expectations and beliefs.
For me, it’s about taking back ownership of how I’m represented. Doing what feels right for us, being excited for this next chapter in our lives! Tradition is sincere & loving until it starts feeling like forced performance and sigh to self and sucking it up for the sake of it.
It’s exciting and nice to start building our own foundation and choosing something that feels light, honest, and aligned. The name we land on will be our version of family, one that’s built out of intention, not obligation. And maybe a proud& iconic way of subtly, fuck off??, thank you
