Wearing Almost Nothing Since Forever.

Sheer Commitment.
There’s something so deeply chic & genius to me about the art of almost nothing.
Not nothing in the giving up sense. The kind of nothing that somehow takes years to perfect. The naked face.
The sheer dress. The tinted moisturizer that costs more than actual foundation because God forbid anyone knows you’re wearing anything at all.
The hair that looks “undone” but would emotionally destroy you if it air dried wrong.
I’ve realized the older I get, the more I love feeling bare. Like, I truly hate the feeling of when I have makeup sitting on my face all day, Not exposed. Not overly polished. Just myself.
I love when my tinted skin care is so invisible people think I simply woke up looking glowy and vaguely expensive.
I love clothes that feel like they’re barely participating. Tiny straps. Sheer fabrics. Oversized knits falling off shoulders. Dresses that look like slips someone accidentally left the house in. The eternal philosophy of: I had nothing to wear so I wore almost nothing. Excluded the meltdowns..
It has always been the blueprint of cool.
Every era has worshipped the “naked” woman in some form. The effortlessly beautiful girl who looks untouched, unbothered, impossibly natural. Which is ironic considering “natural” is usually held together by serums, lasers, brow gels, strategic dehydration, and a frightening amount of money spent trying to look like we simply do nothing and mind our business.
Women are incredibly high maintenance in pursuit of appearing low maintenance. And that’s the culture.
That’s the entire beauty industry performing effortlessness and calling it natural. Because much like the cerulean sweater speech taught us, we love to think we independently decided we wanted XY&Z when, realistically, someone in a boardroom probably got there first.
As Women we are sold the idea that beauty should look effortless, not that it actually should be.
I also think my attachment to looking “bare” comes from something less aesthetic and a little more psychological.
Recently, Erin Moreira wrote something in Oversharing, Weekly: Vol. 2 that felt painfully familiar:
“How is it that one day you look in the mirror and your thoughts are something along the lines of ‘you fat ugly pimply toad you should never eat anything other than celery for the remainder of your life and be indoors at all times to spare people from looking at you.’”
And that shit landed, because womanhood sometimes feels like existing inside an ever-changing relationship with your reflection.
The beauty industry has spent decades trying to sell women the fantasy of looking natural through increasingly unnatural means, and we all bought in immediately!
The girls who “don’t wear makeup” are carrying around a tinted SPF, brow gel, cream blush, lash serum, lip treatment, under-eye corrector, and some sort of glowy liquid in a beige tube that costs eighty-seven dollars but allegedly “just evens things out.” & I may be that Bitch too, honestly lol
Nothing has consumed women more than the pursuit of looking untouched.
& fashion has always mirrored that exact same obsession. The slip dress. The naked dress. Sheer fabrics. Tiny tanks. Thin straps. Oversized men’s button-downs hanging off one shoulder like you had to run out the door while getting dressed. Every cool girl era somehow circles back to the same idea, she looks like she’s barely trying, therefore everyone is obsessed with her!!
There’s a confidence to wearing less. And I don’t even mean revealing less in a sexy way necessarily, though obviously that exists too. Less visual noise. Some of the chicest women alive look like they got dressed in low lighting with three minutes to spare.
Which is why my favorite outfits usually feel like almost nothing.. aka comfy soft fabrics(we don’t need to acknowledge my lounge wear collection)
My favorite makeup barely qualifies as makeup.
And my favorite version of beauty has always looked a little undone, a little slept in, a little accidental??Maybe disheveled is actually the word I’m looking for... but anyway!
I Love seeing outfits that feel one step away from being inappropriate for daytime. Tiny shorts with an enormous sweater or shirt. Dresses that resemble elevated lingerie. Tank tops so simple they almost become suspicious.
And I think part of the appeal of the naked aesthetic is that it rejects the idea that femininity has to be overly polished to be powerful. Sometimes the coolest thing a woman can do is look incredibly comfortable in herself.
Honestly, I will probably spend the rest of my life chasing that exact balance. The point where you feel so good in your own skin that getting dressed becomes less about “transforming” yourself & more about slightly enhancing what’s already there.
Anyway, see you at Christmas dinner in something questionably sheer!
